Öt kontinens mintegy 130 országában végzett természetföldrajzi tereptanulmányok, 27 könyv, több száz tudományos közlemény, ismeretterjesztő cikk, valamint a Magyar Földrajzi Múzeum, Érd város egyetlen közgyűjteményének megalapítása – dióhéjban így foglalható össze dr. Balázs Dénes (1924-1997) geográfus egyedülálló életműve. A tudós munkássága, eredményei előtt tiszteleg az a „háromdimenziós kézikönyvként” jellemezhető, hat tematikus egységből álló kiállítás, amely június 8-án 13.30-kor nyílik meg a JPM Természettudományi Osztályán (Pécs, Szabadság u. 2.).
Dr. Balázs Dénes a magyar geográfia egyedülálló, rendkívüli akaraterővel megáldott személyisége volt, példaképének Kőrösi Csoma Sándort tekintette. Pályafutását a mészkővidékek és barlangok kutatásával az Aggteleki-karsztvidéken kezdte. Az ő nevéhez fűződik az égerszögi Szabadság-barlang feltárása.
Később, három évtizeden át öt kontinens mintegy 130 országában végzett természetföldrajzi tereptanulmányokat. Magányos, hátizsákos utazásai eredményeként 27 könyvet, több száz tudományos közleményt, ismeretterjesztő cikket adott közre. Könyvei öt nyelven milliós példányszámban jelentek meg. Nagy figyelmet fordított a természeti értékek megőrzésére, számos cikkében emelte fel szavát a földtani kincseink megóvásáért.
Meghatározó tudományszervező szerepe volt a Magyar Karszt- és Barlangkutató Társulatban és a Magyar Földrajzi Társaságban. Évekig tartó elkötelezett munkával valósította meg 1983-ban a Magyar Földrajzi Múzeumot, Érd város egyetlen közgyűjteményét. A múzeum állandó kiállításai a legjelentősebb magyar utazók, földrajzi felfedezők, illetve a történelmi Magyarország földrajzi és földtani feltáróinak életútját, munkásságát mutatják be. Balázs Dénes szakmai tevékenységét számos kitüntetéssel ismerték el. A hat nyelven beszélő földrajztudós szellemi örökségét tudományos körökben világszerte nagyra becsülik.
A Magyar Földrajzi Múzeum június 8-án (a pécsi Természettudományi Múzeumban) megnyíló vándorkiállítása méltó emléket állít a tudós munkássága előtt. Balázs Dénes utazásai során kimagasló eredményeket ért el a karsztvidékek, a sivatagok, az őserdők, a jég világa és a vulkánok tanulmányozásában. Szintetizáló művet azonban csak az őserdők és a sivatagok világáról írhatott. Ugyan elkészítette a továbbiak vázlatait is, de ezek a kötetek már nem jelenhettek meg. Célunk, hogy egy kiállítás formájában váltsuk valóra Balázs Dénes egykori álmát.
A magyar és angol nyelvű kiállítás egy „háromdimenziós kézikönyv”, melynek hat tematikus egységében nem csak a földrajz szerelmesei érzik otthon magukat, hanem életkortól és földrajzjegytől függetlenül minden kíváncsi és a világra térben és időben egyaránt nyitott érdeklődő. A tárlat tablóanyaga, valamint a tárgyak és installációk egy része vándorkiállítás formájában már több helyen is bemutatták az országban, kibővített, állandó kiállításként a Magyar Földrajzi Múzeumban látható.
A Nemzeti Kulturális Alap támogatásával megvalósult kiállítás – amelyet június 8-án 13.30-kor dr. Lóczy Dénes egyetemi tanár (PTE TTK Földrajzi és Földtudományi Intézet) nyit meg – 2018. szeptember 1-jéig tekinthető meg a JPM Természettudományi Osztályán (Pécs, Szabadság u. 2.) keddtől szombatig 10 és 16 óra között.
